Raising an Ebenezer: Why We Pause to Remember
In the Old Testament, whenever God moved powerfully among His people, the prophets and patriarchs frequently built altars or set up marker stones. When the Israelites experienced a miraculous victory over their oppressors, Samuel set up a stone between Mizpah and Shen to serve as a lasting physical witness of divine help.
“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, ‘Till now the Lord has helped us.'” – 1 Samuel 7:12
An anniversary is a spiritual Ebenezer. “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” – Colossians 3:14-15
Notice how Paul ties the peace of Christ directly to an attitude of thankfulness. When gratitude rules your heart, fear loses its authority. You no longer need to know what the next five, ten, or thirty years look like, because you know the One who holds every year in His hands.
